Early artists to grace its floorboards included escapologist Harry Houdini, comedian Jack Benny and America’s Sweetheart, Mae West.1930s popular culture shifted from vaudeville to the silver screen and so the Majestic Theatre became a hotspot for movie premieres, welcoming the likes of Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, before the 1980s heralded a new renaissance which saw the building go back to its roots to become a dedicated performing arts centre.This charming performance space is almost worth a visit for the ornate interior alone. Step back in time as you enter the plush baroque lobby with its sweeping grand staircases. Note the intricate detail and meticulous application of 24-carat gold leaf on the accents and mouldings in the auditorium and try not to get distracted by the wonderful Corinthian columns that flank the main stage. It’s interesting to note the juxtaposition of the exterior, with its neon lighting, and the opulence of the interior design.Today visitors can enjoy a wide range of performances from concerts and comedy shows, to theatre, ballet and more. With such a variety of entertainment, there really is something for everyone.
