SMCCU Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Gain deeper insights into the culture, customs and religions of the United Arab Emirates when you visit the SMCCU Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Take advantage of the center in its goal to open doors and open minds. This non-profit organization hosts a variety of activities to improve understanding and communications between local residents and foreigners. It is housed in a traditional home with a wind tower, an architectural device that creates natural ventilation and cooling in the building.
Enjoy a cultural question and answer session with an Emirati presenter. As you discuss religion, local customs or any subject you choose, sample traditional snacks. They might include saloona, an Emirati stew, a pancake known as chabab and mhammar, spiced local fish.
Sign up for one of the heritage tours. These pass through Dubai's Al Fahidi Historic District and visit the Diwan Mosque, among other places of interest. They also include a question and answer session as well as Arabic tea, coffee and dates. Join one of the center’s visits to the Jumeirah Mosque. This is the only mosque in Dubai that is open to non-Muslims.
Attend a traditional breakfast, lunch, dinner or brunch. These social gatherings also provide opportunities to quiz your host about local cultures and traditions.
Explore some of the city's souks on a creekside tour. During the trip you will ride on a water taxi across the Dubai Creek to the gold and spice souks. Browse the shops for jewelry, gemstones and numerous colorful and flavorful spices, possibly some you’ve never tasted before.
