Take a trip to the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District to experience the place where the famous architect developed his signature prairie school style. While you are there, admire well-preserved examples of many other architectural styles as well.

Begin your exploration at the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. Walk through the site where the world-renowned architect designed some of his most famous structures. Daily public tours offer insight into the private and professional life of Wright and highlight the unique details of his home.

After your tour, stop by the gift shop to grab a guide book and then head out to explore the rest of the neighborhood at your own pace. Make sure to keep your camera close at hand to take photos of the iconic houses and buildings. About 80 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are distributed throughout the district. Keep an eye out for the famous Nathan G. Moore and Arthur Heurtley houses, which are two of Wright's most beloved designs.

In addition to Wright’s iconic prairie school style, you can also admire examples of Gothic and Tudor Revival, 1920s Medieval, art deco and craftsmen designs. The district is widely regarded as the country’s best collection of architecture from the past century and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. There are over 1,300 homes that showcase notable architecture packed into this district, which covers around 80 city blocks.

Take a break in one of Oak Park’s restaurants and cafés. The downtown area is also filled with boutiques and galleries where you can grab a memento from your visit. After exploring the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District, take the bus or commuter rail to downtown Chicago to see more of the architect’s iconic buildings. Both the Frederick C. Robie House and the Rookery are easily accessible from Oak Park using public transport.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District is located in Oak Park, a village 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of downtown Chicago. Guided tours cost a small fee and last about 1.5 hours. Tours are not available on major holidays.
