Field

Marvel at the majesty of the Yoho National Park, go hiking to find fossils, admire the historic buildings or relax and enjoy the tranquility.

Field is a quaint little town with a small town feel. It is set right in the middle of the Yoho National Park, surrounded by the grand natural décor of the Rocky Mountains.

Stroll around this former mining settlement to admire its historic buildings. It’s easy enough to find your way around town, but the Yoho National Park Visitor Centre can assist you with a national park pass and sightseeing tips.

While in the visitor center, view some of the ancient fossils that can be found in this area. Or, if you are fit enough to make it up to the Walcott Quarry, join a guided hike to the Burgess Shale Fossil Beds. As one of the most important fossil beds in the world, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has provided scientists with a better understanding of the origins of life.

Put on your hiking boots and experience the natural beauty of the Yoho National Park, including Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake. There is access for all abilities year-round. Don’t forget to stop at Natural Bridge to witness the power of the Kicking Horse River as it makes its way through the rock.

Driving up Kicking Horse Pass, marvel at the engineering skills used for the Spiral Tunnels. Watch as a train loops through the tunnels to spiral its way up or down the mountain. The two viewing areas are open from mid June through mid October.

Get your blood pumping with one of the outdoor adventure activities. Whether it is rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking or whitewater rafting, there are many ways to get your thrills here.

Winter brings a whole new range of things to do. Go cross-country skiing on the trails that radiate out from the edge of town or try snowshoeing or dog sledding. Field sits between the ski resorts of Lake Louise and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, so skiing and snowboarding are other great options.

At night, enjoy a meal in an atmospheric restaurant or guest house to soak up Field’s small-town charm once more.
