Kunming City Centre is the city’s historic, commercial and social heartland. Go on a self-guided walking tour around the city’s inner center and admire heritage architecture, riverside promenades and spacious squares. Visit the shopping precinct and pick up the latest in electronics and fashion or find the ancient quarter with its tranquil pavilion that has withstood the tides of time.

Jinma Biji Square lies at the city’s core. This wide square is flanked by historic façades and features two superb Chinese arches. Known as Jinma Biji Fang, or “the archway of golden horse and jade rooster,” this landmark is an awe-inspiring sight to see in daylight or dramatically lit at night. The square is a good place to pick up souvenirs, such as locally crafted tie-dye fabric and woodcarvings. Check out Dongfeng Square in the mornings to see locals gathering to play badminton or do tai chi. If you are visiting on a weekend, you might also see street performers doing impromptu theater shows.

Stroll along the walkways alongside the Panlong River to the west of Dongfeng Square and you’ll find a busy shopping district filled with fashion boutiques and electronics shops. Nearby, the Jingxing Flower and Bird Market sells a vast array of brightly colored birds, such as mynahs, parrots, thrushes and cuckoos. Take in the heady aroma and vivid colors of the market’s flowers, which include orchids, camellias, roses, lilies and tulips. You can also browse antiques and curios at this market.

Green Lake Park is a pretty oasis situated a short distance from the heart of the city. Stroll beneath the willow trees and contemplate in quiet pavilions in this parkland.

Kunming City Centre is spread across five major blocks in the heart of Kunming. Explore the area on foot or by bicycle, taxi, bus or the subway. Plan ahead if you intend on traveling by road, as traffic can become very congested. There are a selection of hotels located within Kunming City Centre, making the district easily accessible on foot.
