Parana

Gaze in awe at a monumental waterfall, hike over forest-clad mountains, enjoy a scenic train journey and bathe at a coastline dotted with attractive beaches.

Paraná is one of the three states that make up Brazil’s South Region. It’s a place that has varied attractions to match the diversity of its topography and ethnicity. Admire majestic waterfalls, trek in national parks, beach-hop and visit energetic cities. Paraná was first inhabited by indigenous tribes; Europeans began arriving in the 1500s and helped develop the state’s wealth through agricultural endeavors.

Paraná’s main attraction is Iguaçu Falls, a natural wonder made up of some 275 rushing waterfalls. It sits in Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, which straddles the border between Brazil and Argentina. Nearby Foz do Iguaçu is a great base for visiting the falls and home to several interesting landmarks. One of these is Itaipu Dam, a hydroelectric power plant and ground-breaking feat of engineering.

Travel inland across rolling green hills and past vast meadows to Ponta Grossa. This is the jumping off point for hiking trips amid the dramatic rock formations of Parque Estadual de Vila Velha. Also nearby is Parque Nacional dos Campos Gerais, where you’ll find impressive petroglyphs and waterfalls. Experience Ukrainian traditions in Brazil at Prudentópolis.

In the state capital, Curitiba, walk wide tree-lined boulevards and relax in its many green spaces. Discover multicultural districts such as the Italian-influenced Santa Felicidade. Catch a train from the city center for a spectacular journey across Atlantic rainforests and the Serra do Mar mountain rangeto colonial Morretes.

Like much of the rest of Brazil, there is no shortage of beaches along Paraná’s Atlantic coastline. Discover tropical islands, including Ilha da Cotinga and Ilha do Mel, scattered around Paranaguá Bay. Relax at secluded coves, go tubing and spot dolphins at Parque Nacional do Superagui. Guaratuba and Pontal do Paraná are two tourist-friendly resorts with sweeping stretches of sand and perfect-blue water.

Reach the state of Paraná by flying to the international airports at Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu. Get between destinations via bus or rent a car and explore at your own pace along the well-maintained roads.
