Tourist Guide
Volendam showing touring and a small town or village
Volendam is a hospitable harbour town famous for its traditional costumes, fishing and folk music where old traditions and modern leisureliness converge.

The distinctive village of Volendam has been a popular subject for famous painters since 1880. Take in the atmosphere while shopping, wining and dining in the authentic town centre. Its location on the IJsselmeer also makes it a paradise for water sports lovers. In the evening, you can enjoy the exciting nightlife.

Volendam, which was originally called Follendam, was established in 1357 when a dam was built for the old harbour in Edam. The new town quickly attracted farmers and fishermen and grew into a prosperous harbour which offers beautiful, timeless views of characteristic old houses and traditional fishing boats that moor here alongside more modern vessels.

The Volendams Museum will tell you everything about the traditional costumes worn in Volendam, home interiors, paintings and model ships. Music lovers will appreciate the Palingsoundmuseum which will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the unique folk music Volendam is famous for. Alternate culture with a walk across the green dike from where you can take in an ever changing view of the IJsselmeer while relaxing in a typical Dutch landscape.

If you like architecture, you must visit the Stolphoevekerk in the town centre. It was built in 1658 and is the oldest and best maintained 'stolp' (bell jar) church in the Netherlands.

For a spectacular leap back in time, take the Marken Express to the former island of Marken. Explore the charming harbour or take a photo of the whole family in traditional costumes.

There are hotels, B&Bs and camping sites for every budget in and around Volendam.

Volendam is easy to reach from most cities in the Netherlands. A bus leaves every 15 minutes from Amsterdam central station, and if you're travelling by car, you can take the IJtunnel.

Visit Volendam and experience Dutch folklore, music and hospitality on the banks of the former South Sea.
