Like many university towns Linkoping started its days as a religious centre. The Vreta Kloster was the first convent in Sweden and was founded as early as the 12th century. Today all that remains of the convent are ruins, and a church has been built in its place. Situated on a hill above the village of Berg, ten kilometres from the centre of Linkoping, this church offers its visitors panoramic views of the beautiful country side.
While in Berg make sure to also visit the scenic and popular Berg Locks. This famous flight of seven locks in Gota Canal attract many visitors interested in the spectacle of lockage. Back in Linkoping, take a stroll through Old Linkoping where older houses from the city centre have been moved. Old Linkoping is home to the famous Swedish sweet manufacturer Cloetta. Visit the factory and learn how the sweets are made and buy discounted treats in the shop, which is furnished and decorated according to a nostalgic fifties theme. Those with less of a sweet tooth can find savoury delicacies in Linkoping New Market Hall.
Linkoping is located along Gota Canal and connects to a few major roads. Its location between some of the bigger cities in Sweden make it easily accessible by car and train, and there is a small domestic airport. As a tourist it is easy to get around in the centre by foot or by bike.
