Withthis in mind, it’s perhaps not surprising that this remarkable little town hasa vibrant energy and excellent restaurants to enjoy. And, as if that isn’tenough, it also offers some of the most astounding views over the Irish Sea.

Spectacular in summer, Holyheadis known for its stunning coastal trails and it is the beginning and end point forthe Anglesey coastal path. With natural wonders in abundance, a rich andfar-reaching maritime history and the longest breakwater in the UK, there is noshortage of interesting features to enjoy in this quirky town.

HolyheadBreakwater Promenade

At1.7 miles long, Holyhead Breakwater is the longestin the UK – a particularly impressive feat when you consider that the structurewas completed in 1873. In good weather, you can enjoy a gentle stroll along thepromenade that sits atop this piece of Victorian history. At the end you willfind a small lighthouse and outstanding offshore views of the Welsh coastline.

Holyhead’sSouth Stack Lighthouse and RSPB Reserve

Forlighthouse lovers, the town has another impressive treat in store. West ofcentral Holyhead, South Stack Lighthouse has beencalling out to sailors in the dark for over 200 years. It is situated in a RSPBnature reserve that is home to rare birds, including puffins and choughs. You don’tneed to be a geologist to appreciate the rock formations here either. But don’tforget your binoculars!

Breakwater Country Park

From sheer cliffs to countryside, another outdooroption is the Breakwater Country Park. Built inthe quarry from which the granite was taken for HolyheadBreakwater – hence the name – the park is over 100 acres insize. Climb Holyhead Mountain, enjoy views fromthe highest point in Anglesey and come down the other side where you can have awell-earned cup of tea in the park cafe, whilst you soak up the tranquillity.

EatingOut in Holyhead

Withall this local walking available, and the Anglesey coastal path and nearby SnowdoniaNational Park haven’t been mentioned yet, you’re bound to work up anappetite. As a port town, Holyhead has dozens ofgreat places to eat. Find a bistro overlooking the harbour or stop off for acake in one its quaint tearooms. Great little getaway

It is a very historic small town, with people only staying a night I guess due to ferries. Range of places to eat, but a little run down and closes early. Friendly where we went.

If you go walking on the mountain make sure you are prepared for a sudden arrival of mist. It took us by surprise at the highest point and we needed advice on the best way back down once we had lost sight of the coast.
