Rio San Juan
Journey to wondrous biological reserves, explore unique wetlands and spot exciting wildlife in Río San Juan. Back on the mainland lies the relaxed town of El Castillo, where the biggest attraction is the 17th-century Spanish fortress, La Fortaleza de la Limpia Pura e Inmaculada Concepción. This photogenic fortress has withstood multiple pirate attacks and now contains an interesting on-site museum. Visit the El Castillo Tourist Office near the docks to sign up for caiman-spotting night tours and other excursions.
Join guided treks into the designated sections of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve and spot some of the amazing animals that live in this special rainforest. Ask your guide to tell you about the medicinal plants and foods of the forest and search for sloths, poisonous frogs and macaws. Tourists can also enter the reserve by boat down the San Juan River. Both overnight stays and daytrips can be arranged from the town of San Juan de Nicaragua.
