Yuen Po Bird Market
Yuen Po Street Bird Garden was built in 1997 to preserve the spirit and popularity of the bird stalls that once dotted the streets of Mongkok. Join the thousands of locals and visitors who come here each year to explore this musical garden and see some of the open-air bird stalls that give the area such a peaceful atmosphere.
Explore the traditional Chinese-style grounds, with beautiful gateways and elegant sitting areas, and enjoy the various birds and the owners who take such delight and pride in them. Walk beneath the imposing ‘pai lou’ (gateways) as you wander the garden. These traditional constructions are a celebration of a particular spirit or natural element and separate the park into courtyards. On one side of the park, you’ll find a sitting area lined with trees, while on the other you’ll see lines of bird stalls and shopkeepers.
Take a seat in the landscaped area to enjoy the exquisite murals and mosaics of birds that line the walls of the surrounding buildings. Strike up a conversation with one of the bird-owners who often walk their pet birds through these courtyards. Wander past the bird stalls, beautiful old cages and colorful birds that keep Hong Kong’s old world charm alive. Though the garden is quite small, you’ll find around 70 bird stalls here, filled with a dazzling variety of species.
After a visit to the Bird Garden, walk south to the nearby goldfish market where you’ll see hundreds of colorful fish species and impressive aquarium displays. Alternatively head to the flower market and find over 100 stalls selling exotic flowers which locals take home for color and good fortune.
The Yuen Po Street Bird Garden is free to enter and open every day until early evening. Access to the garden is easy by metro and bus.
