With an opulence worthy of the former monarchs buried inside, this 15th-century chapel is the go-to spot for royal ceremonies and weddings.

Extraordinary Gothic features and religious treasures decorate St. George’s Chapel in the Windsor Castle complex. Deemed the future burial place of Queen Elizabeth II, it contains the tombs of Henry VIII and Charles I, among other iconic historical figures. Consider the rich history of royal weddings and burials that took place in this architectural masterpiece.

Gaze up at the row of 76 heraldic animals, including Wales’ red dragon and England’s lion, adorning the pinnacles on the chapel’s roof. Known as the Queen’s Beasts, these emblems were initially raised in the 1500s, while the current incarnations date from 1925.

Walk along the black-and-white checked floor, fringed by stalls with elegant lamps. An ever-present reminder of the site’s innovation and artistry lingers overhead in the form of the stone ceiling. Admire the flags of the Knights of the Garter that flank the fan vaulting of this exceptional covering. Notice how light penetrates the colorful stained-glass windows enclosing the chapel’s interior.

Construction on the chapel began in 1475, when Edward IV was on the throne. In 2018, this site was designated as host for the weddings of Prince Harry and of his cousin Princess Eugenie, both of whom were baptized here. See this site during televised portions of this heralded royal wedding event.

Attend one of the regular events taking place in the chapel, including art interpretations and cultural celebrations. Buy something to remember your trip at the gift shop. See the flamboyant Changing the Guard ceremony for the switchover of watches in the castle.

Access to the chapel is included in the admission fee for Windsor Castle. Visit the site Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. On Sundays, its services are open to worshippers.

St. George’s Chapel is in the Lower Ward of the Windsor Castle complex. Arrive at the Windsor & Eton Riverside railway station and walk south for a few minutes to reach the chapel.

The Queen Victoria Statue, the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum and the Theatre Royal are among the highlights in the vicinity.
