In 1979, Shenzhen was chosen as China's first special economic zone because of its close proximity to Hong Kong. Today, Shenzhen has become one of China's most prosperous and most densely populated cities. Domestic tourists to Shenzhen still outnumber international visitors, but this might soon change as more people discover the city's family friendly amusement parks, beautiful beaches, wide selection of parks, and hidden bits of history.Don’t Miss
For many Chinese families, Shenzhen's main draw is its theme parks. These parks typically feature replicas of famous Chinese and international landmarks, daily dancing and singing shows, water attractions, and amusement park rides. One park even boasts an indoor ski slope, while another is built around the Minsk Soviet aircraft carrier.
Shenzhen also contains more parks and green spaces within its boundaries than almost any other Chinese city. A large Deng Xiaoping bronze statue stands on top of the mountain and namesake of Shenzhen's most central park, Lianhua Mountain. The Hong Fa Temple is located in another lovely Shenzhen green space, Lake of the Immortals Botanical Gardens. Mangrove National Park, the smallest Chinese national park, is a popular bird watching spot.
Another Shenzhen national park, Wutong Mountain, includes and shares its name with the Pearl River Delta's second highest peak. The Shenzhen TV Company's transmission tower stands on the Lesser Wutong peak. Shiyan Lake Hot Spring Resort and Yangtai Mountain Forest Park may not be as easy to reach as other Shenzhen attractions, but are well worth the extra effort. The nearby Dapeng Peninsula contains some of China's most beautiful beaches.Restaurants and Bars
Shenzhen's famous Eat Streets are filled with restaurants where visitors can sample dishes from nearly every corner of China at affordable prices. Hua Qiang Bei is where visitors can find familiar Western chains, while Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) contains Shenzhen's finest Korean restaurants. Several street vendors sell egg cheung fun, a popular morning treat. Shekou and Coco Park are Shenzhen's two major bar streets.Shopping
Cash is the preferred means of payment at Luohu Commercial City, where visitors can purchase high quality counterfeit goods across the border from Hong Kong. Shoppers can spend a whole day browsing Dong Men Pedestrian Street's cheap clothing and other items. Hua Qiang Bei, SEG, and Mingtong are Shenzhen's major electronics markets. An Olympic- size indoor skating rink is situated at MixC Shopping Mall, Shenzhen's biggest and most upscale shopping centre.
