Sao Lourenco Point

Sao Lourenco Point showing rocky coastline
Enjoy a rewarding hike, cool off with a swim and admire arresting views at Madeira’s easternmost point.

Sao Lourenco Point is a narrow peninsula distinguished by its intriguing volcanic rock formations, which have been carved over the centuries by the sea and wind. Stretching approximately 5.6 miles (9 kilometres) long and 1.2 miles (2 kilometres) wide, this unusual desert-like landscape was classified as a nature reserve to protect its unique flora and fauna.

Look for the peninsula’s old lighthouse, perched on an islet that projects into the sea. Originally constructed in the late 19th century, this lighthouse is said to be the oldest in Madeira. Accessible only by boat, the lighthouse has operated automatically since the 1980s. Today, it’s powered by solar energy.

Follow the trail curving around the peninsula and trace a path upwards to a scenic lookout point. This 4.3-mile (7-kilometre) trail begins at the parking lot and takes between 2 to 3 hours to hike. One of the most popular times of day to hike along this trail is during the late afternoon, when you can watch the colours of the sunset illuminating the peninsula’s multi-toned rock formations.

As you hike along the trail, look for some of the area’s distinctive animals and plants. You’ll see wispy everlastings, spiky cardoons and brightly colored ice plants. You might spot birds flying overhead or, if you’re lucky, endangered Mediterranean monk seals swimming off the coast.

When you reach the peak of the trail, take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous views over the island and sea. Look south to see the rocky and barren-looking Ilhas Desertas (Deserted Islands). To the north, you’ll be able to see Porto Santo Island. This island is home to unspoiled beaches, whitewashed villas and volcanic peaks.

Prainha, the island’s only natural black-sand beach, is located at the base of the cliff. Popular with locals and tourists, this small beach is known for its excellent swimming conditions.

Sao Lourenco Point can be reached by bus from Caniçal. Parking is available on-site and the trail is free to enjoy any time of day.
