About Kolkata

Kolkata is the second-largest city in India, and the largest destination in the West Bengal region. It is commonly referred to as the cultural gem of India, and boasts a very interesting colonial history. The city was home to the East India Trading Company, and became the capital of British India, which explains why Kolkata is drenched in traditional European architecture.

Don’t Miss

Historical sites are found across the city. Fort William is a magnificent colonial-built citadel that still stands proudly today. It was first constructed in 1773, and was almost impregnable. Tourists can, however, only visit this site with special permission. Not far from this site is the marble-built Victoria Monument. In northern Kolkata, the widely known Marble Palace is a magnificent attraction. The onsite garden here and dozens of statues make this a beautiful part of Kolkata city.

Each year, plenty of interesting festivals are held in the major cities around India. However, the most eye-catching must-see celebration is the Durga Puja festival, held each October. It is a Hindu event which sees the city of Kolkata turn into a thriving carnival. Streets are often shut down while many tens of thousands of visitors flock to this fascinating event.

Restaurants and Bars

The cuisine in Kolkata is simply magical. The city has plenty of Bengali restaurants nowadays, serving popular dishes like hilsa fish and machar jhol. Bengali sweets and cakes are also worth trying. Snacks like syrup-dipped cheese balls and mishti doi sweetened yoghurt are ubiquitous. Not surprisingly, the unique Indian dishes of Kolkata are highly sought after. Chowringhee Road has an assortment of cheap vendors selling popular local snacks. Clubs and pubs are commonly found in the Esplanade district and in southern Kolkata, and primarily cater for the young crowd.

Shopping

Kolkata has a huge range of shopping facilities and has historically been an important trade centre for handicrafts of East India; this is still true today. Maidan Market is renowned for its cheap sporting goods, while Chandni Market boasts an incredible range of electronic items at affordable prices. Clothing stores can also be found at both Treasure Island Market and the New Market. Various large malls dot the city, including South City Mall and the Metropolis Shopping Centre.
