We stayed her 3 times, January to March 2012 for a total of 11 nights. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and greeted us like old friends each time we returned. They also looked after a case for us whilst we were traveling around. The rooms are clean with ample space and seating and comfortable beds, though the decor is a bit scuffed in places. In some rooms, muffled sounds from the nightly disco (about 7-11p.m.) can be heard. It didn't stop us from sleeping, but if you are a light sleeper, mention when you book. (Though if you are a light sleeper, you'll probably have a problem with Kolkata anyway!) There is no restaurant, but they do provide room service and the food is excellent - the best veg pakoras and aloo parathas we've had anywhere. Although our booking via the web said breakfast was not included, they provided a great spread every morning at no extra cost and kept trying to persuade us to have more. We were also provided with an English language newspaper each morning. The hotel itself is in a very convenient position, ten minutes walk to Rabindra Sadan metro station and pick up point for many buses, whilst several others pass directly in front of the hotel. Park Street and the Victoria Monument are also within walking distance if you are reasonably energetic. The room rates are very competitive for such a good location. Your taxi driver will probably be totally clueless, so ask to be taken along A.J.C. Bhose Road from the Exide building. It's on the same side, a couple of doors down from Casa Fortuna which is on a corner and fairly easy to spot. The Shila is on the first floor, with only a narrow staircase at street level, so look upwards for the signage which is very clear.
