About Colombo

Sri Lanka’s largest city, Colombo is a sprawling city with a great mixture of modern skyscrapers, colonial buildings and ruins. It sits on the west coast of the island country and features many canals, the country’s busiest harbour and a large array of landmarks, as well as having accommodation to suit all budgets.

Don’t Miss

There is so much to see in Colombo, what with its stunning architecture, cultural sights and natural attractions, that a visitor could easily spend days wandering around the city.

In the heart of Colombo is Beira Lake that is surrounded by businesses but it also an important landmark. The lake is home to storks, lizards and pelicans and runs into the Galle Face, an urban park that stretches for 500 metres along the coast. It is the largest open space in the city and a popular place for families to spend a day. Galle Face is also home to the Galle Face Hotel, which is one of the oldest hotels in Colombo.

Gangaramaya Temple sits on an island in the lake and is one of the most important Buddhist temples in the city. It is also a stunning complex that mixes modernism and culture, using Thai, Chinese, Indian and Sri Lankan architecture elements. Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque is another popular tourist attraction as it is an impressive building and is the oldest mosque in the city.

There are many beautiful historical buildings in the city, including the Old Colombo Dutch Hospital, Sirimathipaya Mansion and the National Museum of Colombo that has collections of the most important items in Sri Lanka’s history, including the Kandyan monarchs’ throne and crown.

Restaurants and Bars

There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Colombo, though the cheapest options are the street stalls that sell lunch packets and roti. Sri Lankan and Indian cuisine can be found everywhere, though there are also a few known fast-food chains around. The best Western cuisine can be had in hotels like the Cinnamon Grand Colombo and the Hilton Colombo. Mount Lavinia is the best place to enjoy the city’s nightlife, though there are also some popular bars in the Cinnamon Gardens area.

Shopping

The Pettah Market is the best place in Colombo for bargain shopping, where everything from fruit to electronics can be found. There are also a few modern shopping malls in the city that are ideal for those that can’t handle the crowds at the market, though their prices will be higher.
