Malaysia’s most extensive hill station, the Cameron Highlands takes up an area of 712 square kilometres at around 1,000 metres above sea level. It has been a popular tourist destination since the 1930s thanks to its tea plantations, orchards, waterfalls, wildlife and cool climate. There are eight neighbourhoods in the Cameron Highlands, all of which have a selection of places to stay.Don’t Miss
Mount Batu Brinchang is the highest mountain in the region and is accessible by car, though it is also possible to hike three hours to the top of the mountain. At the peak is a 15-metre high observation tower that boasts fantastic views of the entire region. Hikers can follow the boardwalk to the Mossy Forest, which is an area that is covered in a thick carpet of moss.
There are also a number of other natural attractions in the Cameron Highlands, like the Parit Waterfall, which is accessed by a path that sits next to the Century Pines Resort. The Bharat Tea plantation has a café that sells its tea, as well as offering hiking trails through the beautiful plantation, while the Butterfly Garden houses numerous butterflies as well as other insects.
The Cameron Highlands Golf Course opened its doors in 1935 and today is one of the most beautiful golf courses in Malaysia. Next to it is the All Souls’ Church that was used by the British in the 1950s. In addition, the entire area is filled with Tudor style homes, some of which are now accommodation like the Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands and The Lakehouse Cameron Highlands.Restaurants and Bars
There is no shortage of places to eat and drink in the Cameron Highlands, as well as a wide variety of cuisine to choose from, including Malay, Indian, Chinese and European food. While here, all visitors should try steamboat, which is a soup of boiled meat and vegetables that diners cook themselves. The best selection of places to eat and drink are in the village of Tanah Rata, with hotels like the Cameron Highlands Resort boasting lovely English tea rooms.Shopping
Cactus are quite popular in the Cameron Highlands and there are a few places to purchase these native plants, like Cactus Valley in Brinchang. Tea is also of course a favoured souvenir to bring home and is widely available throughout the entire area, though buying from the tea estates themselves will save purchasers a bit of money.
