Black Sand Beach is located at the north of Langkawi Island and is, quite literally, a beach with black sand. Geologists dispute the reasons behind the black sand and local mythology is predictably rife on the subject – it’s thought more likely though that the unusual colour is due to abundance of minerals flowing down from Mount Raya to the beach in rainwater, thus affecting the sand. The beach is located on the site of a former fishing village and boasts a jetty, children’s playground and small market.
There are lots of attractions near Black Sand Beach, including other beaches like Shark Bay and Tanjung Rhu, as well as the Hot Springs Village and the Craft Cultural Complex. As most of Langkawi’s accommodation can be found in the south of the island, around 20 kilometres away from the beach near Kuah town, visitors will probably need to arrange their own transportation to the beach and its surrounding attractions.
