Bishop Museum

Bishop Museum
A stunning gallery featuring its own planetarium, where you can find out more about the remarkable natural history of Hawaii.

Founded way back in 1889, this fascinating museum hosts an array of collections all about Hawaii's unique culture and history. Here at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, you can see how a volcano erupts, learn about the astronomical myths and legends of the Polynesians and admire a superb set of Hawaiian and Polynesian artifacts.

In the heart of the museum, you'll find the magnificent Hawaiian Hall, the first part of the museum to be built, which is immediately recognisable with its blend of Victorian architecture and Polynesian features. Have a look at the colourful Hawaiian capes falling from the walls, as well as the wide collection of Hawaiian artifacts on display. Here, you will also find a 15-metre sperm whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling, which will let you see and fully appreciate the truly incredible bone structure of these huge underwater creatures.

As well as the Hawaiian Hall, you will also have the chance to explore the Polynesian Hall, where you will find clothing, weapons and instruments from across the islands.

Make sure you visit the Science Adventure Centre too, a fascinating space comprising five floors with many interactive exhibits that will teach you all about the Hawaiian environment. Here, you can see how lava flows from volcanoes and learn about what lurks at the bottom of the ocean. Throughout the day, you can also watch volcanic eruption displays here.

The museum's planetarium is a hugely popular attraction too, with thousands of stars and planets depicting the structure of our galaxy. Shows are held here every day, or of course you can wander and explore the area at your leisure.

Situated in the Kalihi area of Honolulu, the Bishop Museum is easy to reach by bus or car, with bus routes operating here, as well as free parking available on site. You can enjoy a picnic on its large lawn, or grab light snacks or a meal at the café. The museum closes every Tuesday and is shut on Christmas Day. Make sure you allow two to three hours to make the most of your visit.
