History

  • Hawa Mahal translated means ‘Palace of Winds’ or ‘Palace of the Breeze’
  • The structure was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh and designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the shape of Krishna, the Hindu God’s crown, complete with a honeycomb structure design
  • The Palace was built so women of the royal family could watch festivities and processions from the windows without having to go outside or being seen
  • It was built with pink and red sandstone, in accordance with the other monuments of the city giving Jaipur its name, ‘Pink City’
  • Today, the Hawa Mahal is one of the most visited places in Jaipur
  • Visitors can see stunning views of Jaipur from the top of the palace, especially at sunrise

  • From Jaipur International Airport (JAI) a trip to Hawa Mahal is less than half an hour by taxi/car or over an hour by bus
