In an effort to increase revenue for the nation's floundering
tourism industry and tap a major market of tourists searching for
destinations for everything from weekend getaways to a family vacation, the country of Jordan has begun
actively wooing Indian travelers to visit its storied ruins,
religious sites and cultural artifacts.
In the first five months of the year, more than 20,000 Indian
travelers made the trip to the Middle Eastern country, a remarkable
95 percent increase from the previous year, according to Jordan
Tourism Board Marketing Manager for Asia, Maher Salman. These
tourists tended to venture to the country's most popular sites like
the city of Petra, Jerash, Karak, Mount Nebo and Madaba. The Dead
Sea has also proven to be a popular tourist destination.
"Our focus on India increased in 2009 with aligned efforts in
making Jordan a revered destination for a large number of Indian
tourists," he told ExpressIndia.com
Jordan is also courting several business prospects in an effort to
become more appealing for business travelers within the region. The
country is listed as a "short haul" flight for Indian travelers,
with flights from Delhi or Mumbai typically taking just over five
hours.
