California's San Diego Zoo is renowned throughout the world as a top spot to view and interact with wildlife, but also as one of the best research and rehabilitation facilities. Home to more than 4,000 animals and 800 species, the zoo provides the perfect activity during a family vacation to the beachfront city.
Improvements and new exhibits keep the park, which has been a major attraction since its opening in 1916, fresh for visitors of all ages. The reptile walk and safari park are crowd favorites, along with separate packages with which visitors can get up-close to the animals in behind-the-scenes tours. Other popular attractions are the pandas, polar bears and gorillas, and it is wise to build in extra time to view those favorite exhibits.
The park is located just outside the city, so a San Diego car rental may be needed to reach the zoo. Guided bus tours offer quick overviews of exhibits so visitors can map out which attractions they want to see. Additional shows and performances throughout add elements of education or entertainment.
Nearly 100 acres of wild wonder awaits travelers visiting San Diego and other Southern California cities. Between the interactive experiences and animal showcases, all families should be able to find something to enjoy.
