Tips for a stress-free vacation

One of the main reasons most people go on trips is to relax and escape from life's responsibilities. The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) recently offered some tips to vacationers to ensure a stress-free environment on their much-anticipated getaways.

The countdown to vacation time begins the minute you book your flight, which ASTA recommends travelers do far in advance to allow for more date flexibility and cheaper prices. This also gives time for those going abroad to apply for or update their passports.

Giving yourself time is essential to avoid stress, so travelers should arrive to the airport early in the event of difficulties parking or long security lines. ASTA notes that those who arrive early are least likely to be bumped on an overbooked flight. Most airlines now offer online check-in, which can be done the night before the departure to expedite the process.

Lastly, be aware of the airline's baggage limits. Luggage weighing over a certain amount may be subject to extra charges. Travelers will also want to remember the 3-1-1 rule - gel and liquid toiletries must be no more than three ounces and placed in a one quart-size bag, with one bag allowed per person - to avoid having to throw away personal belongings.
