India’s oldest airline carrier will soon be offering the
country’s domestic travellers more options in Air India flights, thanks to the expansion of the
company’s domestic operations.
AI Express, the low-cost airline carrier under Air India,
announced it was expanding its domestic operations, the Times of
India reports.
According to an unnamed source that spoke to the Times of India,
the carrier officials said they hope AI Express’s domestic
operations reach the size of IndiGo or SpiceJet “in two to three
years in terms of passenger carriage.”
Some business analysts speculated that this move may be a part
of AI’s “turnaround strategy.” Included in this plan may also be
the new T-3 primary hub that opened in Delhi earlier this
month.
The company stated that the hub would serve a total of 22
international destinations that include New York, Chicago, Paris
and Tokyo, as well as daily non-stop services between Delhi and
Goa.
In all, the total number of domestic services provided by Air
India is set to increase from the current rate of 62 per day to 71
per day.
