Westend backpacker in Sydney
I was very pleased with the Westend Backpacker. It is geared more toward the younger 20ish crowd but, if what you are looking for is a simple, comfortable place with friendly and knowledgeable staff, then you will be happy with this hotel. It was easy to find and it was in the heart of the city so, there was lots of things to do near within walking distance.

The worst place we’ve stayed at.
We had a family room, was musty. The sheets were torn and faded and had ugly stains on them. The receptionist was sick with a cold during the H1N1 outbreak and handled our passports while blowing her nose. Could not help us with simple bus information. There were huge cockroaches in the kitchen.

good location, 5 min walk to central station and chinatown with lot of eating areas, also good food court above Paddy’s market.

a typical youth hostel
As youth hostel goes, they are just what you would expect, you get charged for everything and they give you the minimal that you need in a room, just a bunk bed and a hanger closet without any hangers = useless. Bring your own towel and hair dryer because of course they don’t provide anything. The location is superb and they do offer some free drinks and a couple of tours. (Definitely go on the Bondi beach to Conggee Beach hike). Cleaning staff for the hotel is great, does a wonderful job. Reception staff is polite but not does not go out of their way to make you happy (again, hostel environment). Hope this helps.
