While Agra is best known as home to the Taj Mahal, the famous mausoleum, the city is a wonderful destination for a family vacation. Located in northern India on the banks of the Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are two of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. Both of these sites contain excellent examples of structures built during the Mughal era, which lasted from 1526 to 1658.
The Taj Mahal was built out of marble as a memorial to the favorite wife of the reigning Shah after her death, and took over twenty years to be completed. The mausoleum is commonly regarded as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Agra Fort is a model of northern Indian construction methods during the 16th and 17th century. Built out of red sandstone, the fort was later renovated into a palace, and offers a view of the Taj Mahal. Ironically, the same Shah who commissioned the Taj Mahal spent the last eight years of his life held prisoner here by his son.
When considering your next family holiday, make sure to get a taste of history by taking a moment to explore the historic buildings of Agra.
