About Xuanwu
Located immediately southwest of central Beijing, the district of Xuanwu is an interesting place often overlooked. Though the nearby downtown area boasts more renowned landmarks, there are still plenty of fun and fascinating landmarks in Xuanwu. The area is commonly known for its parks, temples, and other religious sites. It isn’t far from Beijing’s bustling centre and the district offers plenty of hotels.
Don’t MissThe beautifully-landscaped Grand View Garden is an absolute must-visit for travellers. It was first built in the 1980s and includes plenty of temples and pavilions dotting the park. In addition, there is a lovely restaurant onsite and traditional ceremonies are commonplace throughout the year here.
The oldest mosque in Beijing is located in Xuanwu. It is known as the Niu Street Mosque and was erected way back in 996. It is designed using a unique blend of traditional Chinese architecture with Arabic-influenced décor and colour schemes. It is one of the more important religious structures in the district and across Beijing. Not surprisingly, Xuanwu is also home to a large Muslim population evident throughout the Islamic-inspired shop-fronts.
Restaurants and barsThere are plenty of restaurants operating within Xuanwu and many different cuisines are represented here. Shaanxi, Mongol, traditional Chinese, and even Western food can be found. The cheapest area to dine in this district is west of Qianmen Dajie. Regardless of where visitors decide to stay in Xuanwu, they will never be far from a hearty restaurant. Even though there are many backpacker hostels in the area, this part of Beijing does not have a lot of nightlife.
ShoppingIt is easy to spend an entire day shopping in this bustling district. The Qianmen Dajie Pedestrian Street is among Beijing’s oldest shopping landmarks and has more than 500 years of history. Dashilan is another popular shopping haven inside Xuanwu and if tourists would like to try some tea, then visiting Tea Street for a few hours is highly recommended.
