Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum featuring a park and street scenes
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is a celebration of the innovative and exciting world of scientific discovery.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum combines a celebration of the natural world with interactive exhibits showcasing the miracles of modern technology. With thirteen permanent exhibitions and four cinema screens showing films in three and four dimensions, this is a great place to spend a day with the family.

Before you enter, take a moment to admire the building’s spectacular modern architecture. Its outer glass walls enclose four floors arranged in a helix, symbolising the advance of modern science. Once inside, you will find a huge ball made of glass which has been submerged in water. This arrangement was created to represent life’s eternal circle of rejuvenation.

The entire family will love the World of Robots, where some of the most advanced machines ever built by humans perform concerts on the piano and violin, paint works of art before your eyes and solve the Rubik’s cube – a puzzle that defeats many humans! Follow on with a trip to Children’s Technoland, where kids can discover the wondrous workings of the human body as they make their way around a gigantic heart and brain.

Why not spark some friendly competition and head off to the Cradle of Design, testing your creativity by producing your very own movie. Interactive terminals scattered throughout the Light of Wisdom section will help introduce some of the key rules of science. The Earth Exploration Zone will demonstrate the terror of a natural disaster within the secure confines of the museum.

Before you leave, head to one of the cinema screens to experience a fully immersive film experience. The museum will show you the future of cinema with an enormous 3-D IMAX screen, as well as an Iwerks 4-D Cinema.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the sprawling greens of Century Park, the museum has its own underground station and can be reached easily by public bus. Why not combine it with a couple of hours playing in the city’s largest park for a fun-filled family day out.
