Sao Jorge is a beautiful island and definately worth the journey. However it is not crowded with options for accomodation, especially not early October, when we visited. We booked in the Garden hotel the night before we had to head back to the main island, as the airport was just a 10 minute ride from here. The hotel could certainly use a renovation, it is like a trip to the early 90s. There is also old carpet on the floors which seems rather an unfortunate choice in such humid environments and which does not enhance an image of cleanliness.
The staff is friendly enough but not very proactive or involved. To my request if there was anything we could do or see in the area during our afternoon, the bored answer from a tired looking receptionist was a sad "No not really". On further insistance though, she indicated a nice walk we might take and arranged a taxidriver to take us to the starting point. The pool is quite nice, and even better are the natural rock pools just a few hundreds metres away. The view over the ocean is fantastic. All in all, this hotel is attractive for its location but unfortunately not for much else.
