“Perfect for a short break.”

We stayed here for 3 days in Feb 09. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. They called the room within 15 minutes of our arrival to check everything was to our satisfaction. It rained constantly whilst we were in SF so the staff found us plenty of indoor events to visit around the city. The weather certainly did not affect our stay. The hotel does feel a little dated but was very clean and the service certainly made up for it. Would stay here again and the location is perfect for all areas of the city.

“Excellent Service”

This hotel is really well placed to visit all the major areas. It was on a regular bus route and had bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The Staff were extremely polite and helpful. The room was very clean, a good size and had comfortable twin beds. The furnishings were tasteful and modern. I would return to this hotel next time I stay in San Francisco.

“Good hotel, good location”

It is advertised as a boutique hotel and so I expected a modern, contemporary hotel. It is quite old and quirky which is OK but not expected. The room has all the facilities (coffee maker, hairdryer, extra blanket, etc) I expected. The staff were extremely helpful, recommending an excellent city tour and booking it for us. The area is handy for Union Square but is a good walk from Fisherman's Wharf, although you can get the Cable Car. By and large the area is OK, but there are dodgy areas nearby. A small supermarket 5 minutes walk away is useful. At night there was a lot of noise, particularly sirens, which disturbed our sleep.

“Recommended hotel - great staff very helpful”

Had a wonderful stay in this hotel. First time in San Francisco and this hotel was everything we could have wanted. The staff were fantastic and although we had to request a room change due to being by the noisy elevator, they moved all our stuff for us. Very helpful. Enormous bed - very comfortable. Only minus points as mentioned by others is it isn't easy to get a lay-in if your neighbours are up, as the connecting doors between rooms mean you can hear every word. I had to buy ear-plugs. Quite noisy in that respect.

“Brilliant hotel and people”

The hotel was in an excellent location, close to Union Square and within reach of Fishermans Whart. Hotel staff and management were helpful and friendly from the minute we arrived to the time the car (which they had arranged for us) came to take us back to the airport. They arranged cars/excursions and helped with all local information. I would recommend this hotel to anyone that wanted to visit San Francisco.

“Really good value”

I almost hesitate to write this since it may get just too popular, but this is the best value hotel I have ever stayed in. I've stayed in comparable hotels in Paris that were over twice the price. My room was beautiful (and you can open the windows). The staff are really helpful and friendly. I would certainly come back.

“A little Jem”

This was my second time in Joie De Vivre hotel and I was even more impressed. The Hotel Carlton doesn't look much from the outside but when you get in! Lovely decor, a large clean room. The staff were very helpful and the restaurant was great (sort of arabic fusion) try the tofu benedict - great! Also recommend the retaurant first left outside the hotel, called the Brick! Fanstastic food, great atmosphere. Great location for seing San Francisco, turn right to head towards Union Square, the cable cars, Pier 39 etc. Turning left , mmmhh the neighbourhood gets a bit dodgy! Would recommend it to anyone, might try another Joie De Vivre hotel the next time, well worth the money. Enjoy! Ocbotber 2007 UK.

“Gorgeous hotel!!!”

This place is fantastic, one of the best hotels we've stayed at. The room was amazing, the staff were wonderful and friendly and the location was great. We would love to go back, and will as soon as we've saved up again!

“Excellent Hotel at competitive price”

Stayed for 5 nights in September. Found the location ideal for sightseeing on foot. 15 mins from Union Square. Although Fisherman's Wharf 30 - 45mins we didn't find this a problem as we like to explore on foot. Hotel staff very enthusiastic and offered tips on places to visit/eat and bus routes to take to explore further afield. Only made the wine tasting once as were still out sightseeing the other days but a very nice touch. Parking expensive garage next to hotel was $25 per night. Luckily we only had the hire car for the first day having travelled from Yosemite. Only downside was that we had an adjoining door through to the room next door which had quite a gap at the bottom so were kept awake the first night by the chap next door coughing & then a couple of nights later by the new guests coming in at 3am and could hear every detail of their conversation. Used the cushions from the bed to block the gap and muffle the sound. However as said this was the only complaint of the stay.
