Great location and friendly staff
This quaint hotel is a 2 min walk to both Barberini and Spagna metro stations. Close to the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain. The hotel staff provded a map and directions how to get around, which was helpful. My room (single) was very small with a tiny bathroom. The shower curtain can hardly be called a curtain, because it was not really covering anything. I found it quite hilarious. Also the walls are paper thin, so bring ear plugs! Decent value for your money though since the location is wonderful and the hotel seemed very safe. Rome is very easy to get around by walking or taking the metro or tram. There will be a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes! Rome is a very crowdy city and especially on a weekend the lines are long to at least Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica. I recommend getting a Roma pass (available at several tourist info points) and you'll be able to use the metro, tram and bus and skip the lines at the Colosseum. In addition to that you get 2 free entrees and discounts on museum fees. Altough the hotel staff was nice, most of the customer service around the city was terrible. Be prepared for bored faces and waiting for service (and getting chased out of a restaurant table unless you buy more than an ice cream). Tips: A great art museum Palazzo Barberini is located near the hotel. The palace itself with its awesome frescos is already worth the visit. Also Trastevere was less crowded and cute with its narrow streets. Take a bus from the airport! You'll get to the city almost within the same amount of time than with the express train and spend only 4 euros one way.

Good Deal for the Price
This hotel was perfect for my needs as I planned to spend as much time out and about in Rome as possible. It's located near the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain, in a shopping/restaurant district. We were able to walk to the Pantheon, Coliseum and Piazza Novona. While it isn't anything special, I didn't go to Rome for a hotel room. The lobby is on the second floor and the rooms on the third and fourth with no elevator but that wasn't a problem for me.

Outdated hotel in need of massive renovation
I would not recommend this hotel to anybody. The hotel is old and the carpet is disgusting. The beds are uncomfortable and the service is disappointing. On top of all this, the advertised FREE WIFI does not exist. They were "waiting for a tecnician" for the entire week we stayed there.

Our Hotel is located inside a condominium and it is an ancient building, as located in the real centre of Rome. We regret that our client did not appreciated the comfort of our rooms, if we would know during their stay we could have changed the room.

Nice Roman experience!
Stayed at hotel Doge for 4 days in the month of September 2013. What I liked most about the hotel is the location. The metro is just 2 minutes walk, bus stop just across the road and so is the Trevi fountain and other tourist spots. My conference venue, Pontificia Gregoriana Universitas was also just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The hotel is clean and majority of the staff spoke fairly good English which is a great help when traveling in Italy. Would certainly recommend it to other travelers visiting Rome and would stay there again if I ever come back to Rome.

Biggest Joke!!! So Terrible!
PROS: Decent location, great A/C in the room, staff was friendly. CONS: Weak water pressure, second day whole hotel lost hot water, phone in the room didn't work, the TV had terrible reception to the point it was a waste of time to even turn it on, the morning that we left the elevator didn't work, the reception people were almost always on the phone taking care of business but would ignore customers just trying to ask for the room key, breakfast is only a croissant and coffee or juice, the room's decor was dark and depressing, and the price is way too high for the standards.

The hotel was excellent in terms of its location. It was 3mins walk to the Spanish Steps, there is also a metro station there. It is 7 mins walk to the Via Del Corso. Also the neighbour is safe, even at the 4am. Our room was clean, but it was not that comfortable. And the furniture was old. But it was not a problem for me and my friend since we used the hotel just for sleeping. So i recommend this hotel. Enjoy your trip in Rome!

In my top three WORSE hotel experiences, ever
I should have known better reading previous reviews that it was a very poor hotel. The only good item was the location, not great, but good. The street is a little sketchy and it is not dead center in the tourist areas but it is an easy walk to most things. The hotel and room itself was just in very poor and run down condition. The walls were gouged and wall paper was peeling off. Things in my room were held together by tape. The drawer to my nightstand fell apart when I tried to open it. My shower trim was disassembled and laying in the shower so I had to put my shower together to use it. The walls were paper thin. I could hear the guy snoring in the room next to me. Plus a real treat was being waken at 2:00 in the morning by people working, talking and cleaning pots and pans below me. The first morning there I tried to sleep in because of all the noise and got up at 8:30 to find out there was no hot water left. An ice cold shower and shave sure brightened my stay. Hint: get up early if you want to get some of the available hot water in the morning. My single bed was more like a cot than a twin size bed. Oh and breakfast. Well for me, cleanliness counts more than free. My utensils were grotesque. There was so much "gunk" on my knife that I could not believe no one had noticed it, let alone gave it to me to eat with. I skipped breakfast there and moved on... If the utensils are that nasty, what are they doing in the kitchen? I will never return here.

Best hotel for the price in all of Rome
After booking this hotel for a week in Rome, my girlfriend read some negative reviews and had some misgivings before we arrived. I had stayed here in 2010 and loved the location, so I had booked it again. We both could not be more pleased with our choice. The hotel is actually two hotels - Hotel Doge and Hotel Frienza. Same owners and operators. They are undergoing some remodeling so the check in desk is on the second floor, not at ground level. The hotel is clean, the staff very helpful and friendly, and you absoutely cannot beat the location for the price when in Rome. Breakfast was delivered to our room each morning on time by friendly staff. We will go back and we will stay here again. If you are looking for 5 star ammenities, this is not it, but if you want a good place to land within walking distance of most of the sights and the very best resaurants in the city, and some great shopping opportunities, this is it. For the price, you really cannot beat Hotel Doge in Rome.

Good location and basic
When we arrived at the hotel we entered the alleyway that takes you to the lobby. The staff was not overly helpful or friendly, but they were not unpleasant. The lobby is not connected to the section where the rooms are located, and that was a little confusing the first day but after that it made no difference. The rooms are basic, and the king bed is actually two twin beds pulled together. The breakfast that is included is a very typical Italian breakfast, consisting of croissants and coffee/beverages. The hotel itself is nothing fancy, but we did not need anything elaborate. The location was superb, it is only a short walk to some of the major sites in Rome, it is in a safe area, and there are plenty of cute restaurants to go to nearby. I would recommend this hotel to somebody that is going to Rome and they aren't concerned with having a 5-star hotel and they would like to be within walking distance of shopping, sites and food.

Great Location Poor Hotel
This hotel is a complete disgrace. Firstly we had to wait 45 mins for a room as our initial room had an electricity problem which was an immediate concern. When we were finally given a room it was like walking into a fridge. Outside the temperature was freezing and inside was no different. The radiators in the bedroom and bathroom did not work, there was a heater above the door which would not blow hot air. The man on reception came to have a look but could not get it to work. As it was so cold we requested to move. This process took all evening. We were asked to look at another room which had the same problem with the heater, finally we were given a new room where the heater was at least warm. The shower door was broken so the water ran all over the floor. The 2nd night there was no hot water at all so we were unable to wash at all. It had warmed up by the morning but was by no means hot. The towels were not really towels merely thin dish cloths and quite rough. There was no safe in the room either. With all these complaints not once did we receive an apology from the insolent and unbothered staff. it seemed to be almost a chore for them to help us at all. We had paid for the Hotel Doge but actually were staying on the floor that seemed to be the unrefurbished floor and was actually called the Hotel Firenze which was not what we had paid for at all. I am completely outraged by this hotel. The one saving grace was that the breakfast was decent with a varied choice

Great location Very poor hotel
Hotel was a complete disgrace - we had to wait 45 minutes to be able to check in as the room we were assigned had a problem with the electricity which straight away was a worry. Finally we got a room but it was not in Hotel Doge it was Hotel Firenze which we were told was the same thing but actually appeared to be the unrefurbished floor of the Doge. Considering it was 0 degrees outside we were expecting a warm room but instead teh room was freezing cold almost like walking into a stone hut. The heater did not work nor did either the radiator in the bathroom and the bedroom. The shower door was broken which mean the water ran into the bathroom. This was enough so we spoke to reception about these conditions. A man came up to try to fix the heater but could not so we requested to change rooms. We were given another room but again no heat, so we said we had to move again. Our final room had a working heater but on the 2nd night there was no hot water to shower. In the morning it had warmed up but was warm rather than hot. Not once were we apologised to for the inconvenience or the sub standard conditions. In fact they seemed rather put out that we had complained. With the weather so cold i dont think it is too much to expect a warm room and hot water to wash. The towels were rather strange a thin sheet rather than a terry towelling towel but that was not a huge issue. On the plus side the breakfast selection was varied. However ib the whole i was very disappointed by this hotel

The staff were very helpful and efficient. The hotel is in a good location. The room was somewhat grotty, but quiet. The breakfast was simple but adequate. The Good the Bad and the UGLY
The BAD!! This was my first time overseas. I liked the location but they would not let us check in early and it was 2:00 in afternoon before we could get to our room. FORGET THE "LIFT"(Elevator). You can get 2 bodies in it and you have to walk up or down a flight to get to it. There was not any hot water in the bathroom for most of the time. The staff just said they were sorry. The GOOD The good was the girl at the front desk was very helpful and was good to answer any questions abuot ROME!. THE UGLY This hotel was very run down.Does'nt anyone know how to clean it up and a little bit of paint would go a long way! OPPS a LOT of PAINT!!!. One more good The location was great. Spanish steps less than 2 blocks away and Trevi Fountain about 3 blocks or less away. There was a bank next to TREVI and lots of restrauants close by,. The room did have air conditioning and a private bath. FORGET the Breakfast good thing there are lots of coffee shops and restrauants close by. We will go back to ROME but WILL NOT STAY HERE. SPEND A LITTLE MORE MONEY AND BE MORE COMFORTABLE. The bed was rock hard! I usually do not write a negative review but PLEASE PAY attention to this reveiw and RUN FAST away from Hotel DOGE!>

Don't Do It
Do I need to say more. Although this hotel is in a great location, the quality of the hotel is awful. There is no room lockbox, no wifi, breakfast is a joke in itself and security does not exist. While I was there the police arrived to take a report for a stolen camera. The telephone only worked to call the front desk which was never any help. Mildew is visible in the bathroom and water leakage stains were visible on the ceiling. If you are very desperate you should stay here, if not continue to look for another hotel.

Do Not Disregard This Review!!!
This "hotel" is a dump! It is filthy, black mold all over the place, the beds are like rocks and the staff behavior is awful. They claim to include a breakfast, well it was scarce and disgusting. It consists of a roll with no flavor and some watered down lukewarm coffee. I was fearful to be in the stairwells due to poor neighborhood and don't use that elevator!!! It is a death trap. We asked why the place looked so bad and was so filthy and were bluntly told that because they aren't making any money that they don't spend any on the property for years now. This place ruined our much anticipated trip to Rome. True enough, it is accessible to many popular spots but your time is better spent paying a euro for the bus and stay in a clean hotel. The place is a mildly modified old apartment building and an absolute mess. Don't let them ruin your vacation like they did ours!!!

Worst experience ever.
This is the worst hotel my family and I have stayed in. The entrance is horrible, (not a main entrance hotel), you go thru a filthy entrance of abandoned commercial shops and a dingy hallway. The room was disgusting, the carpet very old and filthy like it had not been shampooed/cleaned or changed in years. The bathroon ceiling had plenty of black spots and they did not provide soap or toiletries. The towels felt like potato sacks. The person at the front desk, during the day, was nasty , he did not like people asking him for directions to the attractions. Very unfriendly. The room furniture was so old and dirty, like they had picked it up from a second hand shop or the street. My grand daughter was in tears and refused to shower in their bathroom. I would NEVER recommend this hotel. You should not let this hotel advertise in your hotel chain.

Hotel Doge - good location
The Hotel Doge was a decent hotel, but nothing too special. If you're looking for something clean and in a good location, it's perfect. Don't expect any frills though. Pros: -night receptionist was extremely knowledgeable and helpful; he helped us book reservations online and gave us tips for sightseeing -very close to Spanish Steps -clean Cons: -small room (the door hit the bed when it was open) -tiny shower (arms hit the sides of the shower when you try to wash your hair) -Continental breakfast was disappointing. For the first two days of our stay, all we were given for the continental breakfast was one roll each with some crackers and jam/honey. Only on the third day did we realize that there was cereal available for those who knew to make a special request for it. -Although the hotel was clean, it was generally more run down and old looking than the pictures let on

Should be called the Hotel Deficient
Avoid this place at all costs. It really is not a place you would like to stay. It's dirty, shoddy and old. We had no confidence in the staff; the bathroom had mould growing between the tiles and was in need of a good scrub; the wall was chipped, with holes in the plaster; there were cobwebs in the ceiling; a carpet of cigarette butts littering the window-box and air conditioner outside the window; the TV had no cable and was therefore inoperable; the "lobby" consisted of a desk with fast-talking staff whose main task was to appease the continual flow of customers coming to complain about a lack of pillows, soap, bedding, overcharging and so on. This place could also be called the Hotel Disaster, or the Hotel Disgusting. The lift would carry only one person with two suitcases; the alternative was taking a dimly-lit concrete stairwell, shared by other tenants of the building. Wi-fi was available, but only in a room near the lobby which is also used as the dirty laundry room. But wait, the most memorable thing would have to be the tablecloths on the breafast tables. They were stained and filthy. One can only shudder to think when they might have been changed last. But there's more -- no plates were provided. Breakfast was a bread roll served on a paper napkin. I guess we were expecting more for the price we paid, having stayed at other hotels in Rome which were cheaper and twice as good.

The Hotel isn't really a hotel at all - just a bunch of renovated apartments on split into separate rooms and located on different levels of an apartment building. The rooms are tiny and extremely basic. So is the free breakfast. If you have more than two suitcases - you wouldn't fit into the elevator and there is no bellboy service to help you with the baggage. The rooms are clean but very simple. Staying in such room may spoil an overall expression. No furniture to speak of. King Size bed separated itself into two separate mattresses overnight. The staircase is dirty. The only bright spot is the service - the young Italians spoke good English and were super helpful and courteous. Advice: lower your expectation to the hostel level or look for a proper hotel.

Great Location All You Could Want From A City Break
This hotel is brilliant, excellent value for money and I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to Rome. The location is by far the best you could ask for, literally in between the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain with Vatican City and the Colosseum less than 30 minutes walk away. The room was very clean on arrival and cleaned daily throughout our stay. It is just the right size for a city break with one room with your bed in and a separate private bathroom. Your not going to be in their much, just to sleep (in the surprisingly comfy beds) so you don't really need much else. If there was one thing I had to pick to complain about would be the noise level but that's what you get for being so close to the main attractions. The staff are very friendly and helpful and made our overall stay very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone going to Rome.

Rooms better than the rest of the hotel
It is very hard to find a conveniently located hotel in Rome for an affordable price. Hotel Doge certainly fit that bill but we were concerned of what we would find there. The location is indeed fantastic, no more than 5 minutes walk to the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps). When we checked in, we were too early and the front desk staff, who could have been friendlier, told us to leave our luggage in the adjoining room. The room already had quite a few suitcases and was not secured at all. In fact, we were left all alone in there with other guests' suitcases. Not reassuring. After a great lunch nearby, we returned and our room was ready. The elevator is tiny and is definitely not recommended for anyone with any remote trace of claustrophobia! We decided to throw our bags in it, push the button and race it upstairs... all the way to the 4th floor... We would come to dread these stairs! The room was small, but the bed was reasonably comfortable. It featured air conditioning and a window with a view of balconies of people's apartments. The bathroom was immaculate and a bit larger than usual european downtown hotels. Breakfast was included and was pretty basic. A roll and some pre-packaged pastries, but the cappuccino was decent. With a little work to restore and repaint the walls in the common areas and the stairs, this hotel would look a lot better. Of course, it's pretty basic, but the price is reasonable, and the location perfect.

Perfectly adequate, but bare bones. The hotel had a roof, a bed and a bathroom. That was all they professed to have, and they met that. Location is excellent. I was able to walk all around the pedestrian area in the Pantheon part of Rome. Breakfast was truely continental (rolls and coffee). Bathroom worked with hot/cold water and a flushing toilet. The front deask people were nice, but not very responsive. My TV did not work and it took a long time for them to fix it (days). I did not push hard, because I really did not care to have a TV that much.

DISGUSTING DO NOT STAY HERE
This hotel is disgusting, the worst hotel I have stayed in and I've used youth hostels. The bathroom was not clean, the no smoking room I booked stank of smoke, breakfast was a joke as they expected you to eat off the table mat, no plates... where was we staying on a campsite! The only good thing was it was about a 5min walk from the Spanish steps and Piazza di Spagna. Plaster was falling off the walls on every dirty staircase up 4 floors, we only braved the antiquated lift once. One of the reception staff was midly helpful but they seemed too keen to go on their smoke break. There was hair in the sink (not ours) when we arrived. Noisy street location with deliveries to shops at 4 or 5 in the morning, which staying in a city you do expect some noise. I wish I had believed the bad reviews of this hotel but everyone has different standards, I would not recommend this hotel for the price!
