It is very hard to find a conveniently located hotel in Rome for an affordable price. Hotel Doge certainly fit that bill but we were concerned of what we would find there. The location is indeed fantastic, no more than 5 minutes walk to the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps).
When we checked in, we were too early and the front desk staff, who could have been friendlier, told us to leave our luggage in the adjoining room. The room already had quite a few suitcases and was not secured at all. In fact, we were left all alone in there with other guests' suitcases. Not reassuring.
After a great lunch nearby, we returned and our room was ready. The elevator is tiny and is definitely not recommended for anyone with any remote trace of claustrophobia! We decided to throw our bags in it, push the button and race it upstairs... all the way to the 4th floor... We would come to dread these stairs!
The room was small, but the bed was reasonably comfortable. It featured air conditioning and a window with a view of balconies of people's apartments. The bathroom was immaculate and a bit larger than usual european downtown hotels.
Breakfast was included and was pretty basic. A roll and some pre-packaged pastries, but the cappuccino was decent.
With a little work to restore and repaint the walls in the common areas and the stairs, this hotel would look a lot better. Of course, it's pretty basic, but the price is reasonable, and the location perfect.
