Piazza delle Erbe is a bustling city square in the heart of Verona. Each day a market is set up in the centre of the square and the outdoor chairs and tables of restaurants, bars and cafés are placed on the footpaths. Since the Roman era, Piazza delle Erbe has been a central meeting place for the people of Verona. Many of the streets that cross Verona lead to the square. Admire the Baroque façade of the Palazzo Maffei, one of the most distinctive buildings on the square. The nearby Torre del Gardello dates back to the 14th century.
Notice the large statue of a winged lion, a symbol of the city’s prowess. In the middle of the square stands the cascading Fontana dei Madonna Verona, the centerpiece of Piazza delle Erbe.
The piazza is located in the heart of Verona and can be reached on foot from most central locations. Buses, taxis and interstate trains also stop nearby. Some street parking can be found in the area. The square is open daily and is free of charge.
