Golden Gate Bridge

Arguably the most famous and enduring icon of San Francisco which you can drive along or even explore on foot.

When it's not shrouded by mist, the Golden Gate Bridge is a striking icon of San Francisco. One of the most well-known and most-photographed of the world's bridges, it is a spectacular sight, and making the crossing from one side to the other is an experience not to be missed.

Stretching nearly three kilometres across the so-called "Golden Gate" (the opening of the San Francisco Bay leading out to the Pacific Ocean), this single-span suspension bridge links San Francisco to Marin County. This stunning creation was completed in 1937 after four years of labour.

At the time it was the world's longest suspension bridge, and even though it has been overtaken since then it remains a hugely famous attraction the world over. Moreover it is a strong structure, built to withstand winds of speeds over 160 kilometres per hour.

As you cross the bridge, you'll be rewarded with unparalleled views of the area around the bay, the San Francisco skyline, the Pacific Ocean and the Marin Headlands to the north. Cycling or walking across will give you an insight into the sheer scale of the bridge.

If you do wish to walk across the bridge, you will have to come during daylight hours and make the crossing on the east sidewalk. There is a small barrier running along the pavement which keeps it safely separated from the road. For cyclists there is also a sidewalk on the west, though you can use the east side too. Built so high above the water, it can often be very windy here, so you're advised to bring layers of clothing to wear, even if in the summer.

To see the Golden Gate Bridge from afar in all its glory, head to Vista Point at the north end of the bridge in Marin County. In the early hours of the day you can watch the sunrise here, or at night you can admire the bridge bathed in beautiful light.

Good views of the bridge from Battery Yates (near Fort Baker) and Hawk Hill on the Marin Headlands (especially at sunrise).

Take a hire bike from Powell St (Blazing Saddles), and ride down and across the bridge into Sausalito, and take ferry back (about 3 hours).
