Dallas Museum of Art

Dallas Museum of Art
Discover a wealth of artistic heritage at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Ideally located in the Arts District of downtown Dallas, the Dallas Museum of Art is a fantastic place to spend a few hours, whether you are an art buff or a philistine. With a cultural heritage collection of over 2,200 items spanning a period of 5,000 years, visitors are sure to find works of art that appeal to their individual taste.

This exceptional museum is conveniently spread over four floors allowing visitors to browse through different collections at their own pace.

Explore the Contemporary Art section on the first floor which has works by eminent artists such as Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and the influential Cindy Sherman. European art and sculpture is well represented on the second floor with an array of diverse artifacts from Roman and Greek antiquity. Focusing on Sub-Saharan art, the African Collection on the third floor includes a wooden rhythm pounder from south-eastern Mali as well as an impressive collection of “Standing Male Figures”. Also on the third floor is the Wendy and Emery Reeves Collection. Housed in a replica of their French villa, this collection showcases works from doyens such as Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin and Auguste Renoir. Finally, the American Art Collection on the fourth floor contains an eclectic mix of paintings and sculpture from the colonial era and is worth visiting for its collection of Texas Art alone.

Families are well catered for with a number of workshops geared towards children. “Arturo’s Art and Me” sees young children and adults examine artwork together, read stories and create their own works of art. “Homeschool Class” gives parents and children the opportunity to work together to learn about and create bespoke pieces in the Art Studio.

It's advisable to check out the Dallas Museum of Art website prior to your trip for all the latest information on exhibitions, programmes and other events. If the experience has left you wanting more and you are planning a return trip, why not pop into the museum store and buy the informative “Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the Collections” not only a wonderful souvenir, but also a fantastic addition to any coffee table.
