"Affordable, clean, convenient"
I spent 3 nights at the HOAX, Friday-Sunday. There was nothing particularly remarkable about my 6-bed female dorm, but it was very affordable for a short stay, and very clean and comfortable for the price, with a modern decor, sizable locker (*bring your own lock), and surprisingly spacious room. The staff was friendly and helpful. Although the location was very convenient for a first time visitor to the city-- about a 12-15 minute walk from Albert Dock, a couple minutes from Queen Square Bus Station and the Liverpool One shopping center, around the corner from Mathew St-- the proximity to so many lively parts of the city, a blessing during the day, might be of a nuisance to light sleepers in the later hours. The clubs below the hostel are, unsurprisingly, open very late, and are very loud (particularly on Fri and Sat, obviously) and the hostel clearly intends to appeal to the crowd enjoying the nightlife-- which is not a bad thing, of course, but it definitely is something that someone unfamiliar with this area of the city should be aware of before electing to stay here.
That said, my bed was reasonably comfortable, the complimentary towel meant I didn’t have to pack one, the en suite was a bit of a luxury for a hostel, and the free wi-fi was a nice feature. I would choose to stay here again.
